Preparing Students for Success in the 21st Century Economy: Challenges with Aligning Educational Policy and Curricula with Employer Expectations

This policy brief summarizes recent research on employer expectations for worker skills. Results suggest the current focus on technical proficiencies fails to account for the diverse skills employers desire. Policymakers should support postsecondary programs and curricula that cultivate both technical ("hard") and non-technical ("soft") skills, including apprenticeships and interactive classroom instruction.
