Nationalism, Internationalism, and the Origins of the American Research University

With WISCAPE support in Summer 2005, Faculty Affiliate Adam Nelson completed research on the impact of international travel by American scholars on the progress of research and scientific education in the United States during the 19th century . Several publications stem from this project, including:
  • “Nationalism, Transnationalism, and the American Scholar in the Nineteenth Century: Thoughts on the Career of William Dwight Whitney,” (The New England Quarterly, September 2005).
Nelson, an associate professor of educational policy studies and history, also presented findings from his research at a WISCAPE brown bag forum entitled "Nationalism, Internationalism, and the American Scholar in the 19th Century" on March 3, 2005.
